Silver Coin Values

Silver Coin Values

Understanding different silver coin values is important, and basically the value of silver coins are determined by four factors: rarity, grade, quality and popularity.

The rarest coins have the most value, of course, and this rarity can be due to the limited number of coins struck by the mint or by the number of coins that are in circulation at that point in time.

The grade or condition of the coins is also critical in terms of affecting the overall silver coin values, and proof sets are special coins that have been struck to a higher quality than circulated, and have a greater value as an end result.

The quality also affects the silver coin values, as some coins are considered to be more beautiful than others, and so are worth more money. Although aesthetic appeal is very much a matter for individual taste, there basically seems to be a common and general agreement as to what beautiful is among the coin collectors.

Hiring a Professional

If you have some silver coins that you would like appraised and you do not feel comfortable doing it on your own, then you should know that there is the option of hiring a professional, meaning that you would hire an experienced and knowledgeable coin appraiser who could come and give you a realistic appraisal on your coins.

This is a good idea anyway, unless you are a professional or otherwise knowledgeable yourself, as you certainly do not want to get all excited thinking that you have a valuable silver coin and then be mistaken.

Where in London can I buy coins to collect?

September 10, 2008 | collect coins

Also can you give me any hints on how start my own collection? I like modern coins

I live in the U.S. but you can start by collecting coins from your change. The UK does put out circulating commemoratives. You may want to put a set of dates together of a certain denomination. Coin collecting is really not much different from country to country. You can collect a series by dates or you can put a type set together, one coin of each type made. In London there are a lot of coin dealers, a few are world famous. Just look up coin dealers and hit the shops. If they are friendly and answer your questions then go with them. Unfortunately there are some that won't be bothered with you, for they think you will not spend enough money, to make it worth their time to help you. It is like that here as well as Canada. I know that for a fact. If a dealer helps you and lets you pick his brain so to speak, then he is worth your time and money.

What did Roman people carry their coins in?

September 7, 2008 | roman coins

I need to know what romans used to carry their coins…
If they carried it in pouches or by hand or something???

Lol all answers are based on movies. Not something I would be quick to trust. I researched a little bit and found that it is true that money was carried in bags made of horse skin. However, the person was wealthy, he would never carry the money but rather his servant would do that for him. Women did not carry money. If women needed to buy something they would take it as an I O U and the husbands would have to go and pay for it. If not paid - their version of the court of justice would either execute or exile the woman - not the man. Coins were considered to be of great value so non-wealthy parts of society would not have too many. This would mean that they would carry them on their body - shoes, hat/cap - wherever it would be deemed safe.

How much are 1 oz .999 Fine Silver coins worth these days?

September 7, 2008 | silver coins

I've got maybe 40, some collectibles, some not. All are 1 oz .9999 fine silver. What's a non-collectible silver coin go for these days?

The current silver spot rate is ~$16.61.

So your one ounce coins are worth about that, whereas any 'junk silver' you might own (pre-1965 dimes, quarters, etc) will trade at a little less than 12 times face value.

Edit: If you are looking for a buyer, I will take them off your hands, that way we avoid all of the transaction costs.

But I have to admit that if I were you, I would hold them for the long term. My opinion is that silver will at some point be trading for at least $100/oz.
